SDHC memory card
SDHC
Secure Digital High Capacity cards are high storage flash memory cards. They have a minimum capacity of 4GB. They are commonly used in camcorders, cameras, MP3 players, PDAs and other devices. SDHC cards refer to a format in the flash card market and they are designed for SDHC 2.00 cards. The products that are created to support SD 1.0 and 1.1 cannot use SDHC cards.

Right now there is a growing demand for high capacity flash memory cards and this is because the demand for HD video cameras is also increasing. They also introduce new features like the classifications of the data transfer speed – DTS. Consumers will get a great performance value for devices that support high speed data transfer. SDHC specification 2.00 requires that the cards are classified according to their minimal DTS:
- class 2: for a 2MB/sec minimum sustained DTS
- class 4: for a 4MB/sec minimum sustained DTS
- class 6: for a 6MB/sec minimum sustained DTS
The SDHC cards are guaranteed to a specific sustained DTS. This way the consumers will save money because the cards are classified according to their capacity but also by taking their speed into consideration.
Secure Digital has been created to new specifications for SDHC cards because the previous specification topped a 2GB capacity. This also happened when the SDHC cards have reached 512MB. Right now the manufacturers are aiming at reaching a maximum capacity of 32GB.
The name Secure Digital comes from the fact that it protects copyright data using DRM – digital rights management. This is why the audiovisual industry prefers this type of product for data storage.
A great thing is the fact that the SDHC cards measure no more than the size of a regular postage stamp. The prices have also dropped significantly in the last few years, due to the increasing demand. But make sure that when you buy a device, the label says “SD specification 2.00 compatible”.
